Together with the areas in the neighboring district of Ahrweiler, the juniper heaths of the Vordereifel represent the largest remaining stands on acidic bedrock in Rhineland-Palatinate and the neighboring federal states.

You can thoroughly explore the unspoiled nature of the juniper heaths, for example, on a hike along the “Traumpfad Virne-Burgweg” in the village of Virneburg, as well as the “Traumpfad Wacholderweg” or the “Langscheider Wacholderblick Dream Trail”; the latter two begin at the “Wacholderhütte” (where you can refuel before or after the hike and even spend the night) in Langscheid. By adding the “Bergheidenweg Dream Trail,” the “Wacholderweg” can also be combined into a longer loop.
Or you can join a guided hike led by a member of the “Wacholderwacht Osteifel” (tourismus@vordereifel.de, Tel. 02651 800 995) to learn about the unique features of the heathland vegetation or the history of this one-of-a-kind landscape. This association of conservationists volunteers their time to maintain the juniper heaths, thereby actively protecting the landscape to ensure the long-term preservation of this unique area.

    Die 23 km lange Strecke führt durch typische Vulkanlandschaft, die insbesondere durch den historischen Abbau von Basaltlava, Tuffsteinen und Schaumlava geprägt wurde. Die Vulkanschleife ist eingebettet in die Vulkanlandschaft der Eifel und durch den frühen Basaltlavaabbau geprägt. So sieht man bei der Durchfahrt durch die Gemeinde viele Häuser, Skulpturen und Werkstücke, die aus dem heimischen Naturstein entstanden sind.

    Kirche St. Kastor und Katharina in Kehrig

    The parish church of Kehrig, consecrated by Karden, and the tithe belonged to the Castor monastery in Karden until 1802. 1656 owned the church of Kehrig, which after de Lorenzi from the 13th / 14th. It is said to have originated in the 18th century, three altars. The main altar was consecrated to Castor, the side altars to Mary and Peter. Today's parish church, which was built between 1869 and 1872 by the Düsseldorf architect Pickel, is consecrated to St. Kastor and St. Katharina.
