The local community of Kottenheim is the second largest municipality in the Verbandsgemeinde Vordereifel, conveniently located in terms of transportation, has a train connection, and is well-equipped in terms of infrastructure, with a nursery, a primary school, a supermarket, and various doctors.

Kottenheim, like the surrounding municipalities, is shaped by volcanism. Until the late 1980s, basalt lava and tuff stone were extracted here. As a result, many houses, especially in the town center, are built from local stone and distinctly shape the town's appearance. The Dream Path "Vulkanpfad" leads hikers through the unique volcanic landscape around Kottenheim and takes them on a journey back in time. Particularly worth seeing is the Vulkanparkstation "Kottenheimer Winfeld." Here, high basalt walls have been exposed due to intensive stone extraction, which now serve climbers from near and far as a unique climbing area.

The local community of Kottenheim is also a partner in the cooperation Mühlsteinrevier RheinEifel on the way to UNESCO World Heritage status.

Numerous clubs offer newcomers, as well as guests, great opportunities to spend their leisure time and make contacts.

What "Junker Schilling" is all about can be learned in the Kottenheimer Forest near the Winfeld.
