Majestically, the ruins of Virneburg castle rise above the Nitzbach and the village of Virneburg, west of Mayen. Despite its dominating location and significance, it is one of the lesser-known dynastic castles in the Eifel region. At least one Cologne and one Mainz Archbishop and Elector from the 14th century hailed from the noble family of Virneburg.
The imposing curtain wall, a round tower, and the exterior of the palas, the residential and hall building, currently shape the appearance of the castle. Many other, more hidden structures give a hint at the size and significance of the castle, which has been owned by the Rhineland Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection since 1910.
On the Day of Open Monuments, Sunday, September 14, the association invites visitors to discover the castle and its history. Rudolf Conrads, chairman of the Rhineland Association, will guide the tour. The meeting point is in the courtyard of the castle ruins. The tour inside the castle is not barrier-free; sturdy footwear is recommended.
Participation is free of charge, and no registration is required.
The approximately one-hour tours of the castle take place at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 2:00 PM.
